After Sufficient MPs Report In, Preparations Underway to Coordinate with Secretariat for Parliament Opening Ceremony

The Secretary-General of the House of Representatives explained the procedure for opening the parliamentary session after enough MPs have reported in. Preparations are underway to coordinate with the Secretariat for Parliament to formally request the opening of the parliamentary session. The vote to elect the House Speaker is expected in March.

At 09:40 on 5 March 2026 GMT+7. Mr. Siroj Paetpan, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives. He gave an interview at the Parliament building regarding the readiness of the House of Representatives to open the first parliamentary session. Following the Election Commission's announcement confirming 499 members of the House of Representatives (MPs), he stated that the Secretariat of the House has prepared the area for MPs to report in. It is not necessary to wait until 95% have reported; it only requires a sufficient number of members to report in to support the Prime Minister's formal request for the parliamentary session opening. So far, the government has not directly coordinated but may have contacted officials.

Regarding the Prachachon Party's plan to report in on 9 March, the Secretary-General said this is not a problem; members can report in on any day. What matters is having a sufficient number, possibly on 5 or 6 March, enough to suitably honor the opening ceremony of the parliamentary session, especially since His Majesty is to graciously open it. After the opening ceremony, coordination will proceed with the political party with the largest number of MPs to determine when they will be ready to elect the House Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Once the Speaker receives royal endorsement, a date will be set to vote for the Prime Minister.

When asked if the election of the Speaker would occur in March, Mr. Siroj replied that all options are possible. Usually, the day after the parliamentary opening ceremony, the meeting to elect the Speaker is scheduled, but this is not always the case and depends on the readiness of the political party with the majority.
