Peoples Party Announces Push for Gender Equality Legislation, Emphasizing It Is Not Solely a Womens Issue

The People's Party issued a statement on International Women's Day announcing its commitment to advancing gender equality legislation, emphasizing that this is not only a women's issue but a foundation of democracy that respects equality for everyone.

On 8 Mar 2026 GMT+7, reporters noted that the People's Party posted on Facebook that International Women's Day, observed every 8 March, is an important occasion to reaffirm the global struggle of women for rights, freedom, and equality in all social dimensions. The People's Party affirmed its commitment to creating a society that respects the human dignity of all individuals equally, without being limited by gender, sexual identity, or socially inherited roles that are unjust.

Over time, the People's Party has continuously prioritized policies and legislation related to gender equality. During the 26th parliamentary session, it supported several successful laws, including the Equal Marriage Act, restoring rights and dignity by allowing all couples to register marriages equally; the Labor Protection Act, which increased maternity leave for the first time in 30 years from 98 to 120 days; and amendments to the Penal Code to broaden definitions of sexual offenses and enhance protections for victims of sexual harassment, ensuring everyone can live safely and with dignity in society.

The statement also indicated that moving forward, the People's Party is committed to promoting and supporting gender equality-related bills, which are part of its policies presented during the last election. These include the Anti-Discrimination Act to guarantee that no citizen faces unfair discrimination, and improvements to the Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence Act to make it more effective.

Simultaneously, to genuinely promote representation of women and sexual minorities in politics, the People's Party, including its Gender Equality Working Group, will develop the party into a safe political space for all. This involves improving internal processes such as developing a complaint system for sexual harassment that is friendly and prioritizes the complainants’ safety and reviewing candidate selection processes to increase expert involvement in handling sexual harassment complaints.

The People's Party believes that gender equality is not solely a women's issue but a fundamental pillar of democracy that respects equality for all. Therefore, International Women's Day should not only be a day of celebration but a significant milestone reminding everyone to collectively continue driving ongoing change.

The People's Party reaffirms that promoting gender equality will remain a key goal of the party, both in policy terms, parliamentary work, and in fostering a political culture that genuinely respects the dignity and rights of all individuals.
