Director of Thai-Cambodian Information Center Concerned About Distorted and Provocative News

The director of the Thai-Cambodian Information Center expressed concern about distorted and provocative news, emphasizing the need to present only verified facts and conduct fact checks to reduce conflict. He pointed out that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet revealed plans to discuss border issues after Songkran, but these discussions must await the Joint Border Commission (JBC) meeting following the establishment of Thailand's new government.

On 9 Mar 2026 GMT+7 at Military Airport 2, Wing 6 Don Mueang, Air Chief Marshal Praphas Sonjaidee, Assistant Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force and director of the Thai-Cambodian Situation Information Center, expressed concern about the border situation. He worried about false and distorted information causing provocation. The center continuously monitors the situation and carefully considers information before making decisions to avoid conflict. The focus is on presenting only the truth. He assured the public that any information released by the center has been fact-checked and verified. Furthermore, the information presented avoids provocation to prevent misunderstandings. The goal is to pursue peace, as conflict does not bring happiness to either country. On the security front, efforts are made to stabilize the situation, with the center maintaining a hotline with Cambodia to verify information's accuracy. However, due to certain national limitations, some information may occasionally slip through, so greater caution is urged.

When asked about Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet's statement that border negotiations would occur after Songkran to reclaim territory, Air Chief Marshal Praphas said both sides must adhere to the joint statement issued on 27 Dec 2025. Clause 2 specifies that each side must remain where they currently are. As for how negotiations will proceed, that depends on the Joint Border Commission (JBC) forum. These talks must wait until the new Thai government is formed, possibly by April. Therefore, any statements must stay within the framework of the joint statement, including clauses 9 and 10 concerning compliance with the Ottawa Treaty on mine clearance and cooperation on combating smuggling, as well as clause 16 establishing a coordination center for communication to prevent provocation.
