Peoples Party Urges New Government to Respect 21 Million Vote Consensus, Move Forward with Constitutional Amendment

The People's Party urges the new government to advance constitutional amendments, respecting the consensus of 21 million votes, and stresses the need to open space for public participation without monopolization.

On 10 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Natthawut Buapradum, party-list MP of the People's Party and former chairman of the constitutional amendment committee, took significant action following the Election Commission's official announcement of the referendum results in the Government Gazette, where a majority of over 21 million voters approved the creation of a new constitution.

Mr. Natthawut revealed data from the Election Commission's announcement showing that 21,621,638 people voted in favor of drafting a new constitution. This number reflects the nationwide desire, not just the support base of any single party. Although over 11 million voted against, it is the duty of all parties to foster understanding of how a new constitution can address structural issues in politics, society, and the economy, by maximizing public participation.

Responding to rumors that the new government led by the Bhumjaithai Party might not expedite this issue, Mr. Natthawut expressed surprise and questioned their responsibility, noting the referendum question was posed by the government itself. He said the new cabinet should prioritize this matter urgently and invoke Section 147 to request reconsideration of the original drafts from the People's Party and Bhumjaithai Party that previously passed the first reading, within 60 days from the parliament's opening to proceed on both fronts simultaneously for speed.

Mr. Natthawut affirmed that if the new government ignores the social contract or does not confirm the previously pending draft, the People's Party is ready to submit a new constitutional amendment draft immediately. This aims to establish a drafting mechanism free from any power monopoly and to ensure maximum public involvement at every step. He emphasized there is no reason for the new government not to expedite this; it is a social contract that must be clarified starting today.
