Former Election Commissioner Somchai Plans to Launch Fund to Fight Election Commission, Aid Citizens Sued Team to Visit Crime Suppression Division on 12 Mar

Somchai plans to take a team of citizens to the Crime Suppression Division on 12 March to inquire about the allegations against him. He revealed plans to launch the “Fund to Fight the Election Commission” to assist citizens who have been sued, describing these lawsuits as unfair burdens that leave defendants to fight alone.

At 13:00 on 10 March 2026 at the Chaeng Watthana Government Complex, Mr. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, former member of the Election Commission, spoke regarding the EC filing cases against him. He said that although there have been news reports alleging serious accusations—such as obstructing the EC's duties on election day, opposing the government, violating Section 116 on inciting unrest, or involvement in gang activities—none of these charges have been officially confirmed by the EC. Only media reports have circulated. Therefore, on 12 March, he and others named in the news will visit the Crime Suppression Division to seek details on whether these allegations are true, who made the accusations, and what the charges specifically are. He hopes the Crime Suppression Division will provide factual information, as otherwise it would damage their reputations and lead society to misunderstand them.

Mr. Somchai added that regarding progress on establishing the “Fund to Help Citizens Fight Cases and Sue Back the Election Commission” they are currently compiling a list of affected citizens and identifying who will assist with managing the related expenses. When citizens are charged, they may need to appear in court over many years, potentially losing income, affording lawyers, or paying bail. They are now working to set up this fund to provide such support and expect to announce details to the public next week.

He said, “I am not personally involved in managing the fund, only helping to raise capital. The fund's management is the responsibility of five well-known social figures who are active citizens and fighters for democracy. These five board members will establish regulations to legally assist citizens. The fund aims to operate for up to 10 years to support those defending democracy who may be unfairly targeted or harassed. If wrongful actions by the EC are observed, the fund will also be used to sue the EC. Details will be clarified next week, and everything will be conducted transparently. Not a single baht will reach me or be controlled by me—I will not touch any money.”

When asked whether the fund's establishment was prompted by concerns that the EC might increase lawsuits against citizens, Mr. Somchai replied that they do not have exact figures but noted recent cases in Chonburi and Khan Na Yao districts. It is unknown if other areas are affected. It is the fund board’s duty to gather information and decide the scope of assistance. He might himself request help from the fund. However, assistance will be limited to criminal cases only; civil suits against the EC must be pursued individually, as the fund will not cover those. This initiative is unrelated to any political party and does not seek political involvement. It is a grassroots effort for citizens to support each other.
