Abhisit Reveals Democrat Party Ready to Be Opposition, Confident in Cooperation with Move Forward and Pheu Thai Parties, Sees Sophon as Experienced Speaker Candidate

Abhisit revealed that the Democrat Party was not invited to join the government and is ready to serve as the opposition, cooperating with the Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties without problems. Regarding the selection of the House Speaker, he views Sophon as experienced.

On 11 March 2026, at the Democrat Party headquarters, Abhisit Vejjajiva, the party-list MP and party leader, clarified the party's stance on joining the government. He said the party had not been approached to join the government, and that Anutin Charnvirakul's administration already has sufficient support. The Democrat Party is ready to serve as the opposition. Currently, the focus is on critical economic issues, particularly shadow capital and scammers. Without serious attention to this problem, progress is difficult. The party has provided information and warned about asset transfers, but the Anti-Money Laundering Office and the Securities and Exchange Commission have not acted, resulting in damage from stock sales to evade responsibility. We want answers about who will be accountable and how to prevent recurrence. Society questions what obstacles these two agencies face. If they used their legal powers straightforwardly and swiftly to protect Thai interests, especially now that the government is formed, how can society be confident?

Additionally, the party is monitoring global developments and economic impacts, especially in energy sectors such as oil, gas, and electricity production. Within one to two days, there will be proposals to follow up on policies previously campaigned on, emphasizing reduced reliance on gas for electricity generation. If gas prices continue to rise, citizens will bear the burden without structural adjustments to protect the private sector from hardship.

When asked whether working as the opposition alongside the Kla Party and Pheu Thai Party would cause any problems, Abhisit said he expected none, as being in opposition is different from being in the executive branch. Each party can perform its own role, so problems are unlikely. On 13 March, the party will hold a seminar for its MPs in preparation for the parliamentary session starting on 15 March. This includes orientation and a small seminar for MPs from both systems to discuss the direction of voting for the House Speaker. Whether to vote in favor, against, or abstain depends on each party's stance. He has already presented this issue to his party's MPs. Regarding reports that Sophon Sarum, an MP from Buriram of the Bhumjaithai Party, is proposed as the House Speaker, Abhisit said it is the government's right to nominate its candidate, and Sophon has considerable experience.
