Government Warns to Strictly Inspect Buildings and Billboards Ahead of Summer Storms Violators Face Jail and Fines

The government warns to prepare for summer storms by strictly inspecting buildings, billboards, and structures. Violations carry penalties of up to three months imprisonment, fines up to 60,000 baht, and additional daily fines up to 10,000 baht until compliance is achieved.

On 12 March 2026 GMT+7, Ms. Airin Panrit, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, stated that Thailand is now entering the summer season, which carries risks of summer storms and tropical cyclones that may cause damage to lives and property. The government advises citizens to maintain stable and strong houses, especially securing roof tiles firmly to the framework. People should check for items that could be blown down and report to responsible authorities. During storms, avoid structures prone to collapse. Also, monitor large billboards to ensure their stability for safety. The government stresses strict oversight of temporary constructions in open areas that do not require local authority permits. Officials must ensure operators inspect and maintain these structures firmly and be cautious of hazards from strong winds.

Regarding large billboards, approval for construction or modification must strictly comply with building control laws. A licensed professional engineer must calculate and certify the structure’s stability, especially for billboards at least 10 meters tall or covering 50 square meters or more. In addition to the engineer's certification, a civil engineering specialist must review the design and calculations. According to the 2007 ministerial regulations on building types and inspection methods, any billboard built or modified in violation must be dealt with rigorously by local officials. Offenders face penalties under Section 65 bis: imprisonment up to three months, fines up to 60,000 baht, or both, plus additional daily fines up to 10,000 baht until corrected. Local officials must report violations to investigators for criminal proceedings.

The government urges the public to remain vigilant and inspect buildings, structures, billboards, and tall trees that may be affected by strong winds. It has also instructed government agencies to prepare personnel, equipment, and public safety awareness campaigns to enable prompt assistance to citizens.
