The Democrat Party has unanimously decided to abstain from voting for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, reaffirming its stance as the opposition and expressing confidence that the Prachachon Party will not establish a competing government.
On 13 March 2026, at the Democrat Party headquarters, Mr. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, the party's spokesperson, announced the results of the first meeting of the party's members of the House of Representatives. The key agenda included organizing the party’s leadership team in the House and setting the direction for voting in the upcoming election for the Speaker of the House.
The Democrat Party spokesperson stated that the meeting resolved to elect a new executive team to drive the party’s legislative work as follows: 1. Mr. Satit Wongnongtoei as Chairman of the Democrat Party’s House MPs.
2. Mr. Pitakdej Deddecho as Deputy Chairman of the House MPs (First rank).
3. Mr. Saksit Khaothong as Deputy Chairman of the House MPs (Second rank).
4. Mr. Pasin Pitutecha as Secretary of the House MPs meeting.
Regarding the vote for the Speaker of the House of Representatives scheduled for Sunday, 15 March, Mr. Pongsakorn noted that the Democrat Party has clearly decided to abstain from voting because it currently serves as the opposition party and is not part of the coalition government led by the Bhumjaithai Party.
The Democrat Party spokesperson added that the party will not nominate a candidate for this position and believes that the opposition rival, the Prachachon Party, will likely refrain from competing as well, given the legal stipulation that the opposition leader must not have any party member holding the position of Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House.
“We are confident that the Prachachon Party will adhere to their public declaration not to form a competing government when they are not the leading party. Therefore, with no candidates running and legal restrictions in place, the Democrat Party has resolved to abstain from voting in this instance,” Mr. Pongsakorn said. Mr. Pongsakorn added.
Beyond personnel matters and the voting decision, Mr. Pongsakorn said the meeting also discussed motions the party plans to submit to the House in the near future. These are currently under consultation, and an official press briefing will be held later to inform the media.
