Thai Navy Warns Vessels to Exercise Caution Over “Sea Mines” in Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Strait of Hormuz

The Navy has issued a warning urging Thai vessels to increase vigilance against “sea mines” in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz, recommending avoidance of navigation into high-risk areas.

On 14 March 2026, Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiphan, Navy spokesperson, disclosed that the Navy, through the Maritime Traffic Control Center and Navy Operations Center (MTCC-NavOps), issued an updated maritime security alert on 13 March 2026. This alert warns Thai shipping operators and commercial vessels to exercise increased caution when navigating the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Strait of Hormuz. The region’s security tensions have escalated, and maritime security assessments indicate a likelihood of sea mines being deployed in these areas, posing dangers to commercial shipping and vital global sea lanes.

The Maritime Traffic Control and Vessel Traffic Management Center has issued additional guidance to Thai vessels and shipping operators, summarizing key points as follows:

1. Avoid navigating into high-risk areas unless absolutely necessary.

2. Ship-owning companies should assess risks and strengthen security measures in accordance with the ISPS Code and Best Management Practices (BMP).

3. Continuously monitor the situation and adhere strictly to guidance from maritime security authorities.

4. Maintain communication on Maritime Band radio Channel 16 and be prepared to respond to contact from maritime security agencies operating in the area.

5. Immediately report any suspicious objects or unusual incidents to the Maritime Traffic Control Center, UKMTO, and other relevant agencies.

Additionally, the Navy has provided guidelines for responding to threats from sea mines, aiming to equip ship crews with measures to reduce risks and enhance safety when transiting these waters.

The Navy urges shipping operators and Thai commercial vessels to closely follow alerts and maritime safety information, and to strictly comply with recommendations from relevant authorities to ensure crew and vessel safety. The Navy will continue to monitor and assess the situation continuously and promptly issue necessary alerts.
