Peoples Party Blocks EC from Closing Senator Rigging Case, Demands Court Decision Before PM Election

Prit relentlessly pressured the Election Commission to proceed with the senator rigging case, pointing out clear evidence but noting attempts to whitewash the accused to enable their appointments in the new government.

On 16 March 2026, Mr. Prit Watjrasinthu, spokesperson for the People's Party, held a press conference regarding irregularities in the Election Commission's handling of the senator election fraud case. He stated that this week is a critical time as the full EC will meet to decide on the case files of 229 accused individuals (138 senators and 91 political network members). The People's Party calls on the EC to resolve the matter by submitting the case to the courts for judicial proceedings rather than prematurely closing it based on the opinion of a newly established subcommittee.

Mr. Prit revealed alarming information that currently conflicting findings exist within the EC. The investigation committee No. 26, jointly working with the DSI for over five months, clearly decided to prosecute all 229 individuals due to strong evidence. However, the newly formed subcommittee No. 36, established by the EC in September 2025, voted to "not prosecute," claiming no wrongdoing, amid criticism that the committee was formed specifically to whitewash the case.

Mr. Prit explained four reasons why the EC must forward the case to the courts and cannot avoid responsibility: the evidence is too strong to deny, including repeated ballots with identical numbers, coordinated meetings, shared residences, and money transfers of hundreds of thousands of baht from political groups to senator candidates.

The subcommittee No. 36 raises suspicion and is improper. The EC already has 35 subcommittees using a random system to ensure transparency, yet this 36th was newly created specifically for this case. It also violates EC regulations requiring case conclusions within one year, while nearly two years have passed. Moreover, four of the seven EC members were appointed by the very senators currently accused. If the EC insists on prematurely closing the case, society will question whether this is a payoff to avoid court proceedings. Importantly, reports indicate that several of the 229 accused are expected to be nominated as prime minister and ministers in the parliament. The rush to close the case this week is therefore viewed as a plan to "clear records" and prevent qualification debates on the PM vote day.

Mr. Prit concluded that if the EC defies the joint investigation committee’s decision and insists on ending the case without valid reasons to counter the evidence, it may risk misconduct under Section 157. The People's Party is prepared to use parliamentary and civil society mechanisms to pursue thorough investigations.
