Dr. Prem warned Sophon against becoming the speaker of the 'blue' parliament, urging him to clearly state his position, avoid being controlled by political parties, accelerate the enhancement of legislative scrutiny, and set a clear timeframe for constitutional amendments.
At 11:00 a.m. on 17 March 2026 at the parliament, Dr. Premsak Piyura, a senator, presented work proposals to the new House Speaker, urging the new parliamentary leader to perform duties efficiently and transparently to build public trust in five key areas.
1. In legislation, the quality of laws must be elevated, with prioritization based on urgency. The legislative review process should be improved to be faster but thorough.
2. Regarding approval of independent agencies, doubts must be eliminated that the parliament and these agencies cover for each other. The political party with the majority in the House, seen as behind the Senate selection, raises concerns. Mr. Sophon Sarum, the parliament speaker, must take a clear stand, not be controlled by the 'blue' faction, and ensure the selection of independent agencies is genuinely independent—not dominated by influential groups—to avoid the perception that the upper house, lower house, and independent agencies are all 'blue'.
3. In overseeing the executive branch, there must be strong scrutiny and appropriate opportunities for no-confidence debates.
4. The role of standing and special committees should be enhanced to monitor government policies.
5. Support constitutional amendments according to referendum results, with a clearly announced timeline—not left at the government's discretion. Otherwise, constitutional reform might never happen. The parliament speaker must act with dignity and avoid becoming a subject of ridicule as the head of a 'blue' parliament.
