Speaker of the House Sets Goal to Reduce Energy Consumption in Parliament Buildings by 30%

The Speaker of the House convened a meeting with the Secretariat's executive team, setting a target to reduce energy consumption in the parliament buildings by 30 percent and requesting the Secretariat to implement concrete operational measures.

At 14:00 on 17 March 2026, in meeting room CB 406 on the 4th floor of the parliament building, Mr. Sophon Sarum, Speaker of the House, met with the executives of the Secretariat of the House of Representatives to consider energy measures to manage the impact of the Middle East conflict on the Secretariat's operations.

The Speaker told the executives that they must work with flexibility, compromise, and empathy toward subordinates who face limitations. Given that the parliament building is large and difficult to maintain, energy-saving measures are necessary. Energy conservation can be approached in two ways:

1) Saving energy through spirit and mindset.

2) Saving energy through established measures.

The target is to reduce energy usage by 30 percent. The responsible departments are asked to implement concrete practices, such as cutting electricity use by turning off unused lights and utilizing natural daylight where available, conserving fuel, using natural water sources to irrigate plants to reduce water resource consumption, sorting waste, reducing plastic use, suspending escalator and unused elevator operation on non-meeting days, and considering work-from-home policies appropriately. Cooperation from all parties will ensure smooth operations.
