Somchai Visits Thaksin, Praises Yotsanan for Quick Learning and Political Readiness

Somchai and Yaowapha visited Thaksin at the prison, revealing that Thaksin talked a little about politics but did not focus on any particular issue. They praised Yotsanan for quick learning and readiness to work in politics in the future. They noted his swift adaptation and commitment to political work ahead.

At Klong Prem Central Prison at 10:00 a.m. on 19 Mar 2016, former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, Mrs. Yaowapha Wongsawat, and their personal lawyer Winyat Chatmontri visited Thaksin Shinawatra as family representatives. Outside the prison, a group of Red Shirt supporters continued to gather to welcome and support the Shinawatra family. Thaksin had been detained inside the prison for six months and ten days at that time.

After spending about 35 minutes visiting, Somchai said the visit was a routine family meeting after not seeing each other for over a month due to missing one another. They discussed well-being and family matters as relatives, without any serious issues requiring special discussion.

Regarding politics, they talked a little since Thaksin still regularly follows national news. However, he did not focus on any specific topic, understanding he was in a place where he could not interfere or communicate with outsiders. Most visitors were family members; no political figures came to visit. Thaksin’s mental state was bright and accepting of his current situation. Somchai encouraged him by counting down to his release, saying they would count full days, not fractions. They expect Thaksin to be fully free in about a month or by May, which is a welcome prospect the family eagerly anticipates to be reunited again.

When asked if they discussed Prof. Dr. Yotsanan Wongsawat, also known as “Ajarn Chen,” Somchai said Thaksin praised Ajarn Chen’s improved demeanor since entering politics. Although a newcomer, he learns quickly and diligently researches to prepare for future political work. Thaksin offered encouragement and praised his abilities.

Regarding party management, it is up to the Pheu Thai Party to set policies and conduct meetings. Somchai said he is merely a supporter and encourager of his son, without direct involvement.

As for the country’s future, hope rests with the younger generation since rapid technological changes require new, eager learners to develop the nation to keep pace. Relying on the old system without fresh blood may cause falling behind. The conversation with Thaksin was mostly typical of elders, as Thaksin cannot currently lead any initiatives. It is the direct responsibility of Pheu Thai and related parties. Somchai thanked the media and public for their continued interest, noting they might meet here again on 11 May.
