Chawalit Resigns as Acting Leader of Thai Sang Thai Party Over Chatchawans Defiance of Partys No Support for Anutin as Prime Minister

Chawalit resigns as acting leader of the Thai Sang Thai Party, sacrificing his position over Chatchawan's defiance of the party's decision not to support Anutin as prime minister.

On 19 March 2026, Mr. Chawalit Vichayasuth, acting leader of the Thai Sang Thai Party, announced his resignation to show spirit after failing to control party members to vote in line with the party executive committee's resolution during the recent prime ministerial vote.

Mr. Chawalit revealed that after the election, he asked the two party MPs if they were willing to join the government, and both confirmed their intention to do so to achieve results locally. This led to a unanimous executive committee resolution to join the government with no objections. However, when the actual vote took place, Mr. Chatchawan Patthayathai, MP for Roi Et, voted against the party resolution by not supporting Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul for prime minister.

"As acting party leader, since I cannot ensure members follow the party's resolution, I hereby resign from the positions of deputy leader and acting leader effective immediately," said Mr. Chawalit. He added that Mr. Chatchawan's case is serious and constitutes a grave ethical violation. The party will form a committee to investigate the facts and may forward the case to the National Anti-Corruption Commission for consideration according to past precedents.
