Nattapong Questions Buyers of Snake MPs: Whats Their Motive? Plans Party Action Against Them

Nattapong believes that the People's Party's 'snake' MPs received benefits in return. He questioned those who bought them, asking what their purpose was, given that the government already had enough support. The party is preparing to take disciplinary action against these MPs according to party regulations.

On 19 March 2026 at the Parliament, Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, party-list MP and leader of the People's Party, commented on the case of a 'snake' MP who voted against the party's decision to select Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister—this MP being Suriya Wongaree, MP for Udon Thani constituency 7 of the People's Party. He said he must ask those who bought the vote. He believes that Suriya's vote against the party line was likely not his own decision without other benefits involved. There must be other benefits. He questioned whether they truly want to see the political system as it is and what their purpose was, since the government already has stable and sufficient numbers. He saw no necessity for this act, except aiming to undermine the party's credibility. He personally affirmed that the People's Party remains focused and is ready to fully handle the matter internally, according to party discipline, as done in the past.

Nattapong admitted he had already received preliminary information beforehand, but as the news is still unconfirmed, he could not comment further to avoid accusing fellow members. The party has internal procedures for handling such issues, which require discussion on appropriate measures. He has not yet spoken privately with Suriya, but Suriya's action of voting against the party line clearly shows what has happened.

Regarding rumors that a former 'snake' has been recruiting others, Nattapong said he is somewhat aware of the news. However, the actual facts require an internal investigation. As for the candidate selection process, he confirmed that it was thoroughly scrutinized. At this stage, he could not say what factors led Suriya to act this way. Once the facts are clear, the party will make a further statement to the media.

Veerayut expected to become People's Party leader replacing Nattapong.

Nattapong also spoke about the party executive committee reshuffle scheduled for April, saying that the general meeting must approve all executive members. Whether all will be replaced is a matter for joint discussion. He preferred to wait for clarity on the case involving 44 MPs first. When asked if selecting a new executive committee in late April is too late, he said it is not. The opposition leadership process takes time, as parties take months to be recognized as opposition or government before royal endorsement. Therefore, according to the timeline, the party general meeting does not need to prepare this now.

Asked if the new leader would be Veerayut Kanchuchat, the deputy party leader standing beside him, Nattapong replied, “Let's wait for clarity. Since the case has not yet been resolved by the National Anti-Corruption Commission, I prefer not to speculate in advance.”

However, reporters reported that the People's Party's restructuring and election of a new executive committee will take place next month. Party insiders confirmed that Veerayut will become party leader replacing Nattapong, who will take the position of party secretary.
