The Pheu Thai Party is responding to the Border Sugarcane Farmers Association by preparing to use parliamentary mechanisms to study ways to compensate farmers in seven border provinces after facing a conflict crisis.
On 19 March 2026, Mr. Montri Kamphon, President of the Eastern Border Farmers Association, and Mr. Sirichai Thamma, President of the Surin Province Sugarcane Farmers Association, led a delegation to submit a letter to Mr. Srawong Thienthong, Deputy Leader of the Pheu Thai Party, to convey the severe hardships faced by sugarcane farmers in Sa Kaeo and Surin, who have been directly affected by unrest along the Thai-Cambodian border in recent times.
After hearing their concerns, Mr. Srawong revealed that the sugarcane farmers face three urgent issues: direct damage to fields caused by clashes and a severe shortage of foreign labor; dangerous areas where farmers cannot harvest sugarcane due to unexploded ordnance requiring military clearance; and inadequate compensation budgets that do not reflect actual production costs.
Mr. Srawong emphasized that the Pheu Thai Party will drive efforts through two main mechanisms: collecting data to present to ministries assigned by the coalition government to plan long-term solutions, since border relations may take time to restore; and preparing to urgently propose an oral motion to the House of Representatives to establish a special parliamentary committee to study the problems and formulate tangible compensation measures with all political parties. The party is ready to serve as a liaison between ministries and will push parliament to recognize the hardships of residents in seven border provinces so that locals can resume their livelihoods peacefully.
