Narathiwat Residents Show Support for MP Kamolsak on Hari Raya After Assassination Attempt

Residents of Narathiwat visited Kamolsak Liwamo, MP for Narathiwat from the Prachachat Party, on Hari Raya after learning he had been shot at. They offered prayers for his safety. Initial findings indicate the assailants used an M16 rifle, and authorities believe it was an act of intimidation rather than an attempt on his life.

On 21 March 2026, following the incident where assailants ambushed and fired shots, Kamolsak Liwamo, MP for Narathiwat's 5th district representing the Prachachat Party, was targeted near his residence on a road in Bacho district, Narathiwat province. The attack injured his driver, Uchalumh Kole, and police officer Corporal Harirak Himmihna, who was escorting him. The vehicle was damaged. The incident occurred in the early hours of 20 March 2026.

Earlier today, which coincides with Eid al-Fitr or Hari Raya for Thai Muslims, many local residents came to Kamolsak’s home to visit and offer support, taking the opportunity to extend New Year blessings for happiness and protection from all dangers to his family. Kamolsak, along with his mother, Niyada Liwamo, and his wife, Tuanyamila Sabudo, warmly welcomed visitors and spoke about the need to exercise increased caution.

Regarding the case's progress, officials have not ruled out any of the three possible motives: political, security-related, or personal conflict. Preliminary evidence shows the assailants used two M16 rifles to shoot at Kamolsak. Authorities are awaiting ballistic analysis of all 31 shell casings collected at the scene to determine if more than two M16 rifles were used.

Importantly, based on the behavior of the assailants, officials believe they did not intend to kill Kamolsak but aimed to intimidate him. If the attackers intended to kill, they would have targeted the VIP compartment of the vehicle or stopped the car to shoot again to ensure death. Additionally, CCTV footage tracking the assailants’ vehicle during the attack and escape showed that the pickup truck used had fake license plates.
