Government Encourages One-Hour Lights Out on 28 Mar to Combat Global Warming and Save Energy

The government invites citizens to combat global warming by joining the global “60 Earth Hour” event, turning off lights for one hour simultaneously worldwide to reduce energy use on Saturday, 28 March 2026, from 20:30 to 21:30 GMT+7.

On 22 March 2026, Ms. Lalida Pertvivattana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced the return of the important international global warming reduction event, “60 Earth Hour 2026.” This event is a collaborative international project.

Its purpose is to encourage individuals and organizations to "turn off lights for one hour" to raise awareness about global warming. It was first initiated in 2007 in Australia, where over 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses participated, resulting in a 10.2% reduction in energy use—equivalent to removing 48,000 cars from the roads annually.

The Deputy Spokesperson said that in Thailand, many organizations prioritize this event, such as the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), which leads energy-saving and environmental protection policies. MEA has invited residents in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan to participate. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has encouraged citizens to join the effort to reduce energy use whether at home, work, condos, dormitories, schools, universities, or elsewhere by turning off lights for one hour.

“The government invites all sectors of society to join 60 Earth Hour 2026 by turning off lights and unused electrical appliances for one hour simultaneously with people worldwide on Saturday, 28 March 2026, from 20:30 to 21:30 GMT+7. Turning off lights during this time symbolizes a united commitment to reduce unnecessary electricity use and to address global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions, creating an environmentally friendly ecosystem,” the Deputy Spokesperson emphasized.
