Government Invites Public to Turn Off Lights for One Hour to Combat Global Warming and Reduce Energy Use on 28 March at 8:30 PM

The government invites citizens to combat global warming by joining the "60 Earth Hour" activity, turning off lights simultaneously worldwide to reduce energy consumption on Saturday, 28 March 2026, from 20:30 to 21:30.

Turn off lights for one hour on 28 March 2026.

On 22 March 2026, Ms. Lalida Pertwiwatthana, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the internationally significant global warming mitigation event, “60 Earth Hour 2026,” is back. This activity is an international collaborative project.

Its purpose is to encourage individuals and organizations to “turn off lights for one hour” to raise awareness about global warming. It was first initiated in 2007 in Australia, where over 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses participated, reducing energy consumption by 10.2%, equivalent to removing 48,000 cars from the roads annually.

The Deputy Spokesperson stated that in Thailand, several agencies prioritize this activity. For example, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), which promotes energy saving and environmental protection policies, has invited residents in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan to participate. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration encourages people to join from wherever they are—home, work, condos, dormitories, schools, or universities—anyone can take part in turning off lights for one hour.

“The government invites all sectors of the public to join the 60 Earth Hour 2026 by turning off lights and unused electrical appliances for one hour simultaneously with people worldwide on Saturday, 28 March 2026, from 20:30 to 21:30. Switching off lights during this period symbolizes a collective commitment to reduce unnecessary electricity use and tackle greenhouse gas emissions causing global warming, thereby fostering an environmentally friendly ecosystem,” the Deputy Spokesperson emphasized.
