Foreign Ministry Expedites Repatriation of Thai Workers Bodies After Explosion Orders Evacuation from Risk Areas Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The Foreign Ministry is expediting the repatriation of Thai workers' bodies who were victims of an explosion, scheduled for 27 March, and has ordered the evacuation of Thai nationals from risk areas following escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

On 23 March 2026, the Center for Management and Monitoring of the Middle East Conflict Situation (CMMS), represented by Mr. Panidol Patchimsawat, Acting Director-General of the Information Department and Deputy Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, issued an urgent statement regarding the escalating tensions in the Middle East. This follows continuous retaliatory attacks between opposing parties and Hezbollah, with the conflict spreading to GCC countries.

Mr. Panidol revealed a dramatic incident where Iran launched attacks near Israel's nuclear research centers in the cities of Dimona and Arak, resulting in multiple injuries. However, there are currently no reports of any Thai nationals being injured or affected. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General has called on all parties to urgently de-escalate the violence to protect civilians.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has reached a critical point after the U.S. President issued a decisive order on 22 March to open the route within 48 hours, amid threats of retaliatory attacks from Iran targeting energy infrastructure. The Foreign Ministry has therefore requested Thai nationals in risk areas to evacuate promptly and register with the embassy immediately.

Regarding assistance for Thai workers, arrangements are underway to send back the bodies of Thai workers who died from shrapnel injuries, coordinating with airlines to return the remains to Thailand on 27 March. On 24 March, the Consular Department will visit Chaiyaphum Province to offer condolences and expedite compensation and benefits for the families of the deceased. Additionally, four Thai workers from a shrimp farm in Bandar Abbas, Iran, are being moved out of the city by land to Turkey today (23 March) to safely connect to flights back to Thailand. Since the conflict began, the government has assisted a total of 1,479 Thais to leave risk areas, emphasizing that the safety of Thai nationals in the region remains the top priority.
