Senators Demand Clarity on Constitution Amendment Roadmap, Paving Way for New Constitution with Public Participation

Senators demand clarity on the roadmap for constitutional amendments; Pornchai attributes Thailand's slow economic growth to the 2017 constitution, which has hindered the economy.

On 24 March 2026 at the Parliament, Senator Noraset Prachakorn, Chairman of the Political Development, Public Participation, Civil Rights, and Consumer Protection Committee of the Senate, called on the new government to clarify the roadmap for constitutional amendments. He said that the February 2026 referendum showed over 21 million citizens want to see a new constitution. Therefore, the government should clarify the timeline and clear plans to guide the country toward a new constitution involving public participation. Many people await clarity on the new constitution. Will the government include a constitutional amendment plan in its policy statement to help build trust and increase political legitimacy?

Senator Pornchai Wityalertpan stated that the constitution directly affects citizens' quality of life and economic growth. Since the 2017 constitution, Thailand's economy has grown only 1–2% annually, while Vietnam and Cambodia have clearly higher growth rates. The 2017 constitution is a factor restraining economic progress. He asked how the government plans to foster economic growth. Constitutional amendments can proceed simultaneously with economic problem-solving by appointing a small joint committee of MPs and Senators to drive the process. A good constitution will improve the economy, increase transparency, and offer the public greater oversight of independent organizations. The government must show clarity—not just words—but concrete plans and rapid implementation.
