Introducing the profile of Dr. Nok - Sethaput Suthiwart-Narueput, the new Privy Councillor, who was previously appointed as Advisor to the Bureau of the Royal Household after retiring as the 24th Governor of the Bank of Thailand.
On 26 March 2026, reporters noted that today the Royal Gazette website published a Royal Command appointing Mr. Sethaput Suthiwart-Narueput as a Privy Councillor. Mr. Sethaput Suthiwart-Narueput, nicknamed Nok, was born on 1 February 1965 and is currently 61 years old (in 2026). He is the son of Mr. Owath Suthiwart-Narueput, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As a result, his childhood involved moving abroad from the age of two months, living in Australia, followed by stays in India, Poland, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Mr. Sethaput completed his secondary education in France, where studying history sparked a deep interest in social sciences and a fondness for mathematics. He pursued economics, earning a first-class honors bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College, USA, in 1986, followed by a master's and PhD in economics from Yale University, USA, in 1991 and 1994, respectively.
Mr. Sethaput is an expert in economics, public policy, and financial markets. He began his career as a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Co. in New York City. Later, he joined the World Bank in Washington, D.C., as a Senior Economist. He was invited back to Thailand during the 1997 Asian financial crisis to serve as Co-Director of the Fiscal Policy Research Institute at the Ministry of Finance. After the crisis subsided, he returned to work at the World Bank.
From 2005 onward, Mr. Sethaput held leadership roles in prominent Thai organizations, including Assistant Managing Director at the Stock Exchange of Thailand, Siam Commercial Bank, and the Ministry of Finance. He also served on boards of directors for PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited, Osotspa Public Company Limited, TMB Bank Public Company Limited, the Bank of Thailand, and the Monetary Policy Committee.
Until His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn graciously appointed Mr. Sethaput as the 24th Governor of the Bank of Thailand, succeeding Mr. Vira Sathirathai, effective from 1 October 2020. After completing his term as Governor, His Majesty the King appointed Mr. Sethaput as Advisor to the Bureau of the Royal Household, effective immediately following the end of his previous term on 1 October 2025. Most recently, on 26 March 2026, he received the Royal Command appointing him as a Privy Councillor.
