Thanakorn Affirms Prime Ministers Close Monitoring of Energy Crisis, Explains Limitations of Caretaker Government, Urges End to Mud-Slinging Rhetoric

Thanakorn urged an end to rhetoric that creates public alarm, affirming that the Prime Minister is closely monitoring the energy crisis. He explained that as a caretaker government, some measures are less easily implemented compared to a full-authority government. He declared that anyone found hoarding will face legal action without exception.

On 27 March 2026, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Minister of Industry, spoke about the current energy crisis, stating that the government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is neither neglecting nor ignoring the problem. Many actions are underway, but as a caretaker government, some management tasks cannot be handled as fully as a government with full authority. However, the cabinet has approved the Ministry of Finance to consider reducing excise tax rates, determining appropriate reductions and durations. Assistance is also being provided to vulnerable groups through the state welfare card system and others, including affected entrepreneurs. Importantly, the Prime Minister clearly stated that if anyone is found hoarding, the government is prepared to take immediate legal action without exception.

Regarding the opposition's view that the government’s aid measures are too slow, Thanakorn said the energy crisis affects the entire world, not just Thailand. The Prime Minister is actively engaged, holding special meetings and regularly contacting responsible parties to monitor the situation. He has also instructed MPs to visit communities to communicate accurate information to the public. The Prime Minister may not always publicly announce these efforts, but that does not mean the government is inactive. Unfortunately, some politicians are exploiting the oil issue to stir public alarm for their own gain, which is disgraceful.

"Our country is facing a major energy crisis. If politicians continue to exploit public misunderstanding for personal gain, society will become dominated by rhetoric rather than facts. I urge all parties to unite by proposing constructive solutions that benefit the nation, rather than throwing mud at opponents just for satisfaction. I believe we will overcome this crisis together."
