Nakarint Affirms Constitutional Court Judges Independence, Dismisses Blue Senators Name-Selection Drama

Nakarint affirms the independence of Constitutional Court judges, dismissing the drama over the Senate's blue faction selecting names, and likening it to discovering problems only after moving into a house. Udom laments being labeled a "toxic fruit."

On 31 March 2026 GMT+7, Nakarint Mektrairat, President of the Constitutional Court, addressed criticism regarding the selection of new Constitutional Court judges requiring Senate approval. The process, viewed as influenced by the so-called "blue faction" senators, is a separate matter from the judges' independence in performing their duties. He expressed confidence that those appointed will act independently. He acknowledged that the 2017 Constitution is like buying a house: only after moving in do you start to notice the system's problems. Nevertheless, he stressed that all procedures must follow the legal mechanisms set forth.

Meanwhile, Udom Sitthivirattam, Constitutional Court judge, spoke out with frustration about the frequent labeling of judges as "toxic fruit" due to their appointment during the National Legislative Assembly era. He said he has felt deeply hurt by this stigma, despite being selected by the Supreme Court plenary and undergoing strict background checks. He revealed insider information that during the Senate's selection process, all members of parliament were consulted to thoroughly verify candidates' backgrounds and criticisms. At that time, no complaints or objections were raised against him, affirming that his appointment process was transparent and unbiased.
