Anutin Discusses Southern Border Situation, Urges Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre to Develop Parallel Economic Model to Combat Drugs

The Prime Minister discussed the southern border situation and instructed the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC) to expedite the creation of a model to drive the economy and raise the quality of life for the people. SBPAC confirmed that recent violent incidents are unrelated to the government transition period.

On 3 April 2026 GMT+7 at the Government House, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, held a meeting with the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC), the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), and Mr. Assit Sampanarat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, to follow up on progress in resolving unrest issues in the southern border provinces.

Mr. Piyasiri Watwanarangkura, Secretary-General of SBPAC, said after the discussion that the Prime Minister expressed strong concern about driving economic development in the area. He ordered SBPAC to urgently present models for economic, social, and educational development, including measures to provide relief for affected people, aligning with the government's main policies. Additionally, the Prime Minister stressed strict attention to drug problems, emphasizing that efforts should not focus solely on suppression but also include proactive prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and protecting youth from drug involvement at all costs.

In response to questions about the recent frequent violent incidents, the SBPAC Secretary-General confirmed that these are not related to the government transition period, as multiple factors contribute to the incidents, and authorities continue their ongoing work. Regarding smuggled fuel and illicit exports, Mr. Piyasiri acknowledged these problems exist locally. Currently, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) is working closely with provincial authorities to investigate, aiming to prevent stockpiling or illegal activities that worsen conditions for residents.

Regarding peace talks in the southern border, Mr. Piyasiri stated that everything must conclude through negotiation. As a member of the negotiation team, he focuses on reducing obstacles to area development and pushing for safe zones so residents can live peacefully. However, reports indicate that on the same evening, Mr. Anutin, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Songsak Thongsri, planned to attend the funeral rites of Mrs. Lamnao Yoobamrung, wife of Police Lieutenant Colonel Chalerm Yoobamrung, at Bang Bon Temple to pay respects and offer condolences to the family.
