Supachai Unveils Advisory Team of Big Names, Draws Professionals to Rescue Crisis, Affirms No Salaries and No Party Affiliations

Supachai clarifies that appointing advisors does not involve paying them with public funds; everyone has come wholeheartedly to work for the nation, emphasizing a position free from factional divisions and party affiliations.

On 10 April 2026 GMT+7, Supachai Sutthumpan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, spoke about the progress in forming an advisory board following the government's policy address to Parliament, focusing on the notable invitation extended to Veeraphong Prapa, Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party, to join as part of the Thai Trade Representative (TTR) team.

Supachai stated that Veeraphong was chosen due to his extensive experience, having previously represented Thailand in trade negotiations with the European Union (EU) under the prior administration. This mission remains incomplete and is critically important to Thailand's economy. With the ninth round of FTA talks scheduled for June, she wants someone familiar with the original work to continue seamlessly rather than starting over from scratch.

"Party affiliation is irrelevant. This is a moment to accelerate work because the country is facing a crisis. I want to demonstrate that if actions benefit the nation, we need not divide or restart efforts. Talented individuals must be brought together to build upon existing progress," Supachai said.

Addressing concerns about the budget, as many worry that forming a large advisory team will consume vast public funds, Supachai made it clear that these advisory positions "do not receive compensation." All invitees are esteemed experts with experience and contributions to the country, volunteering sincerely to help tackle issues spanning trade, security, and interconnected geopolitics.

The advisors and experts invited represent a gathering of top economists and senior executives, including in politics and administration: Veerasak Kowsurat (former Minister of Tourism) and Phusit Rattanakul Serirangrit (former Director-General of the Department of Trade Promotion).

In economics and banking: Dr. Kobsak Pootrakul (Bangkok Bank), Dr. Yanyong Thaicharoen (SCB Economic Intelligence Center), Dr. Pipat Luangnarumittrchai (Kiatnakin Phatra), and Nat Luangnarumittrchai (stock market expert).

In academia and ASEAN affairs: Dr. Piti Srisangnam (ASEAN Foundation) and Associate Professor Dr. Arm Tangnirandorn (China studies expert).

In diplomacy and agriculture: Nongnuch Petchrat, Chutinan Kongsak (former ambassador), and Anan Lapsuksatit (expert in agricultural processing).

Supachai concluded that while the qualification verification process is ongoing in accordance with regulations, discussions and initial work have already started to ensure that her role as Deputy Prime Minister operates with maximum efficiency from the first day of full duties.
