Prasert Orders Ministry of Education to Relax School Uniform and Scout Regulations to Help Parents Cope with Living Costs

The Minister of Education has introduced three measures to ease parents’ financial burdens for the new school term, instructing schools to relax strict uniform rules and no longer mandate full scout uniforms.

On 10 April 2026, Mr. Prasert Chantraruangthong, Minister of Education, immediately advanced the ministry’s policy following the government’s policy announcement. He declared an urgent agenda to address the cost-of-living crisis affecting parents as the new school term approaches, introducing three key measures focused on reducing expenses and promoting equal educational opportunities.

Mr. Prasert revealed that he has directed educational institutions nationwide to consider cutting unnecessary expenses by relaxing uniform regulations so Thai children are not excluded from education due to financial barriers. The main guidelines are: students may continue using their existing uniforms even when promoted or transferring schools; additional days are allowed to wear sports or neat casual clothes to reduce the need to buy new uniforms; the full scout or girl guide uniform purchase requirement is canceled, allowing just the neckerchief and hat to be worn with either the school uniform or sportswear.

There are no restrictions on shoe or bag styles or the necessity to bear the school emblem, as long as they are neat and practical. Embroidery on clothing will be limited to the school’s initials rather than full names to reduce costs, extend clothing use, and comply with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).

"Rules must not be barriers preventing children from attending school. I am firmly committed to prioritizing access to education above all else. The Ministry of Education will support every family to overcome this crisis together," Mr. Prasert emphasized. He added that, beyond school measures, the Teachers’ Welfare and Benefits Committee (OTEP) has been assigned to manage and procure textbooks, learning materials, and supplies for sale at controlled prices to directly alleviate financial burdens.

At the macro level, Mr. Prasert stated that he has expedited cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce, especially the Department of Internal Trade, to jointly design measures to reduce prices of essential consumer goods through various government channels. This assistance aims to reach all families nationwide. These directives represent the initial steps in his role as Education Minister. He plans to formally present the comprehensive education policy and strategic direction on 20 April to reassure the public and education personnel across the country.
