Abhisit Explains Allowing Weeraphong to Decide on Resigning as Deputy Leader and Member of Democrat Party if Accepting Trade Representative Role

Abhisit explained that he allowed Weeraphong to decide on resigning from his roles as deputy party leader and member of the Democrat Party to accept the position of Thailand's trade representative, to avoid confusion over his status as opposition.

On 12 April 2026, Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, posted on Facebook clarifying the case of Weeraphong Prapha, the party's deputy leader, being appointed as advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce. He said he was not informed of this by Supajee, but Weeraphong consulted him about being approached to serve as Thailand's trade representative, to lead negotiations with the European Union on a free trade agreement aimed to be completed this year. Weeraphong's case differs from informal advisory roles to ministers, as this is an official political position with remuneration. At the time, Abhisit understood it as a private discussion and was unaware of any government publicity on the matter.

Abhisit also stated that the party agrees this role suits Weeraphong's expertise and interests, and the government and country will benefit if he accepts. However, as deputy leader and party member, Weeraphong's new position would create confusion and conflict with his opposition status. Ultimately, they agree that if Weeraphong wishes to accept, he must resign from his deputy leadership and party membership. It is now up to Weeraphong to decide and act.
