Veerapong has submitted his resignation as deputy leader and member of the Democrat Party, affirming a straightforward expression of intent and confidence in fulfilling trade negotiation goals.
On 12 April 2026, Mr. Veerapong Prapa posted on Facebook that he has officially resigned as deputy leader of the Democrat Party. He confirmed that the entire process was straightforward and transparent with all parties involved. However, due to widespread media speculation and interpretations, he would like to clarify the facts as follows.
1. The reason for my resignation is that I was invited to serve as Thailand's trade representative, responsible for trade negotiations with the European Union. I have previously held this role in the former government and wish to continue the work to completion, believing it will greatly benefit the Thai people. These negotiations have spanned several governments, so continuity is very important. However, since the trade representative acts on behalf of the government, this may conflict with the Democrat Party's current role as government oversight. Therefore, I resigned as deputy leader to ensure transparency and straightforwardness in the work.
Ideology Unchanged
2. Although my role has changed, my ideology remains the same. I joined the Democrat Party because I was impressed by and agreed with Abhisit’s vision to develop Thailand's economy through timely, fair, and effective trade negotiations. I have always upheld this ideology without change. During the election campaign, I promised to help push trade negotiations to success. Now that I have the opportunity to turn that promise into reality, I have decided to accept this role. Today, I move forward as a professional, no longer tied to any political party.
“I still affirm that I am the same Art, unchanged.” Mr. Veerapong added,
Emphasizing Transparency
3. Regarding the process which has been notably discussed, I wish to clarify that upon receiving the official invitation from Ms. Supachai, I, as deputy leader, promptly consulted with Abhisit without delay about accepting the role and the internal party procedures. There was continuous and direct communication to ensure transparency and respect for the roles of all parties. I am confident that everyone has upheld political etiquette and that the country's interests have been the primary consideration.
“Finally, I want to thank leader Abhisit for his continuous support. His vision, ability, and integrity are examples I follow. I also thank the party’s executive committee, members, and all supporters who have encouraged me throughout,” said Mr. Veerapong.
He also affirmed that although he will no longer serve as deputy leader of the Democrat Party, he hopes everyone will continue to accompany him because no role is as important as leading Thailand forward amid overlapping crises like these.
Reporters also noted that Mr. Veerapong sent a thank-you message in the Democrat Party's group chat for the friendship and cooperation over the years.
