Profile of Veerapong Prapa: Resigns as Deputy Leader of Democrat Party to Serve as Thai Trade Representative, Supporting Supachai

An overview of Veerapong Prapa, who was approached by Supachai to serve as Thailand's trade representative before deciding to resign as deputy leader of the Democrat Party after Abhisit set a deadline to choose, given the Democrat Party's position as the opposition.

On 12 April 2026, Mr. Veerapong Prapa sent a message to the Democrat Party strategy group on the LINE app, informing the mostly party executives that he had submitted his resignation as deputy party leader after being invited to join the advisory team of Mrs. Supachai Sutthumpan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce. He later posted on his personal Facebook page, listing three reasons for resigning from the Democrat Party and acknowledging he was approached to become Thailand's trade representative. He affirmed that the role was less important than leading Thailand out of this overlapping crisis, and thanked Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Democrat Party leader, for the opportunity.

Profile of Veerapong Prapa

Mr. Veerapong Prapa, nicknamed Art, was born on 30 September 1984 and is currently 41 years old. He is the son of Mr. Kamphon and Mrs. Witinee Prapa. In his personal life, he is married to Mr. Chantawit Tandasit, a former Deputy Minister of Commerce during the government of Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra. They registered their marriage on 2 July 2025, making them Thailand's first legally recognized LGBTQ married couple under the Equal Marriage Act. Chantawit is the son of Mr. Thakorn Tandasit, former secretary-general of the Thai Sang Thai Party.

Veerapong completed his primary and lower secondary education in Thailand, then attended Burnside High School in Christchurch, New Zealand, for upper secondary studies. He graduated with first-class honors in accounting, international business, and commercial law from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and earned a master's degree in international development from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the United Kingdom.

Professionally, Veerapong worked as an auditor and financial consultant for Ernst & Young (EY), one of the world's Big Four accounting firms, at branches in New Zealand and London, UK. He audited and advised multinational companies in agriculture and finance sectors. Later, he shifted to civil society roles, consulting for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and serving as public communications manager at the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI). He also held a senior business sustainability manager position at the Freedom Fund, an international grant-making organization based in London.

Veerapong Prapa's Political Career

Veerapong came to public attention when appointed Thailand's trade representative on Tuesday, 5 November 2024, during Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra's government. However, by the 2026 election, he was part of Democrat Party leader Abhisit's team upon his return to leadership, being appointed deputy party leader. The situation stirred controversy again on 10 April 2026 when Veerapong was named as an advisor to Mrs. Supachai Sutthumpan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, although the Democrat Party was in opposition and not part of the government.

On 12 April 2026 at 13:03, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, Democrat Party leader, posted on Facebook clarifying that he had never been informed of this appointment by Mrs. Supachai. He said that Veerapong had consulted him about being approached to serve as Thailand's trade representative, leading negotiations with the European Union on a free trade agreement, with the goal of completion within the year. This role differs from informal advisory positions to ministers as it is an official political appointment with remuneration. Therefore, Abhisit urged Veerapong to resign as deputy party leader and from the Democrat Party membership to assume the trade representative position, to avoid confusion about the party's opposition status.

Later the same day, at 16:22, Veerapong posted his resignation letter from the deputy leadership and membership of the Democrat Party, thanking Abhisit for his continuous support. He praised Abhisit's vision, capability, and integrity as his role model. Although no longer deputy leader, Veerapong expressed hope that everyone would continue to support him, emphasizing that no role is more important than leading Thailand forward through this overlapping crisis.
