Suriya, Minister of Agriculture, met with the Russian Deputy Prime Minister and approved the export of urea fertilizer to Thailand. Both sides agreed to form a working group to support continuous trade growth between the two countries.
15 Apr 2026 GMT+7 Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, revealed that on 13 April, he met with Dmitry Patrushev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and Maxim Makovich, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, to discuss trade between Thailand and Russia, which has been continuously growing with a trade volume of about USD 1.6 billion. However, this is not the full potential, and the trend indicates agricultural and food trade between the two countries can grow further.
During the discussions, it was stated that Thailand is interested in importing urea fertilizer from Russia and requested Russia to allocate a quota to Thailand at preferential prices of 1 to 2 million tons per year. The desired fertilizer type is granular, sized 2.5–5 mm. If Russia agrees, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will coordinate with the Russian Ambassador to Thailand to facilitate business discussions between the private sectors of both countries (business matching), aiming for fertilizer exports from Russia to Thailand by May 2026.
Mr. Suriya further stated he proposed establishing a working group composed of Thai and Russian representatives to discuss outstanding issues concerning key products of Thailand and Russia, including jointly agreed scientific and technical matters, and to facilitate completion of import-export procedures within three months.
Meanwhile, Dmitry Patrushev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, revealed that Russia agrees with establishing a working group to jointly resolve outstanding issues concerning key products of Thailand and Russia to support long-term growth of bilateral trade. Regarding Thailand's interest in importing mineral fertilizers from Russia, Russia has both compound fertilizers and nitrogen fertilizers or urea, and is ready to export urea fertilizer to Thailand. Currently, companies PhosAgro and UralChem are interested in exporting, especially under long-term contracts.
Regarding price and specific fertilizer qualities desired, both private sectors are requested to discuss details, and both sides agreed that the Russian Ambassador to Thailand, Mr. Yevgeny Tomikin, will act as the Russian coordinator.
