“Sophon” holds a Songkran merit-making ceremony at Parliament, seizes an auspicious moment to open a restaurant for MPs, believing that the protective chanting will bring peace and happiness to the Thai people,
At 09:00 on 17 Apr 2026 at the Parliament building, Mr. Sophon Sarum, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of Parliament, presided over the Songkran merit-making ceremony to uphold the beautiful Thai tradition. He was joined by Ms. Mallika Jiraphanwavanich, First Deputy Speaker, and Mr. Siroj Paetpan, Secretary-General of the House, along with parliamentary officials. The event was held for the first time in the 11th floor ceremonial hall, normally reserved for parliamentary openings. The ceremony included chanting of Buddhist scriptures for blessings, with nine monks invited. Somdet Phra Buddhacharya (Sanit Chuanpanyo), abbot of Wat Traimit, led the monks. Afterwards, Sophon led officials in the traditional water-pouring ritual for Buddha images to mark the Thai New Year.
Opening a restaurant for MPs.
After the ceremony, Sophon told reporters that the Parliament organized the Songkran merit-making to continue Thai traditions. They poured water on Buddha images and monks and held chanting for blessings on the Parliament building and the nation. He referenced ancient times in the city of Phisali, when calamities and scarcity occurred, and the Buddha recited protective chants—the same verses used today. Sprinkling the Buddha’s blessings brought peace and happiness. As Buddhists, they trust that these protective chants will bring peace, happiness, and blessings to the country and Thai society.
“This merit-making is also for the country because Parliament is the legislative branch. Today is an auspicious day, and we took the opportunity to open a restaurant on the 2nd floor for MPs to dine, with members paying for their own meals. We believe this will not hinder parliamentary sessions as preparations are complete; the only change is MPs paying themselves. Today marks a good day to start positive things for society, the country, and our institution,” Sophon said. .
Encouraging Thai people to overcome crises.
Additionally, Sophon offered blessings to the Thai people on the occasion of Songkran 2026, urging everyone to uphold Buddhist teachings and seek protection from sacred forces. He called on all to unite in overcoming current crises, emphasizing that all sectors must work together to surmount obstacles. Agencies will fully support efforts to assist the public during difficult times. As Speaker and Chairman of Parliament, he pledged to do everything beneficial for the country to help it through challenges and offered encouragement to all who are striving.
