Prime Minister Orders Strict Measures to Address PM2.5 in Northern Region, Citing Forest Fires and Haze as Major Obstacles

Prime Minister Anutin is stepping up efforts to resolve the PM2.5 issue to protect long-term health, stating that forest fires and haze cause the northern region to lose many opportunities for income generation. He urged swift action to solve the problem and build public confidence.

At 13:30 on 20 Apr 2026 GMT+7, at the Yodthap Building, 7th Infantry Division headquarters in Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin welcomed Prime Minister Anutin.ChanweerakulPresided over a meeting to monitor forest fire and PM2.5 dust situations, attended by ministers from the delegation, governors of the upper northern provinces, and heads of relevant government agencies.

Prime Minister Anutin said in his opening remarks that today's meeting aims to monitor and find solutions to public disasters in the northern region, especially forest fires, haze, PM2.5 dust, toxic substances in rivers, and drought. He urged the meeting to discuss preparations for flood and drought prevention as the rainy season approaches. Lessons from last year must be applied to reduce damage affecting the public and the economy. He has listened to reports from government agencies, field visits, and parliamentary debates. PM2.5 is a severe problem caused by domestic burning, burning in neighboring countries, and atmospheric pressure. Two of these factors can be controlled. Domestic burning must be strictly prevented and enforced by officials, while burning in neighboring countries requiresmeasuresto make them aware of the impact on bilateral relations if it continues. For weather conditions, technology must be used to assist. The highest priority is public health, ensuring people's quality of life is not harmed long-term. Special emphasis must be placed on strict law enforcement against offenders to effectively solve the problem. If support is needed, please inform the meeting so solutions can be jointly sought.

Prime Minister Anutin stated that all agencies must integrate efforts on both large and small scales to achieve maximum results quickly. This year, he personally sees that Thailand, especially the upper northern provinces, is losing many opportunities to increase citizens' income. Opportunities for livelihoods and economic growth are hindered by forest fires and haze. This situation cannot continue as it will erode confidence, leaving only hardship in the area. However, the problem can still be fixed because there are two controllable issues. For those beyond control, natural factors will be addressed with technology and scientific methods. He urged everyone to work together to find solutions. This visit must not be wasted; there must be clear directions and actions. He is fully ready to support efforts to achieve goals and called on all to devote their best efforts for the people.
