Prime Minister Summons Sihasak and NSC Secretary to Discuss Possible Cancellation of MOU 44 and Formation of Southern Border Peace Dialogue Committee

The Prime Minister summoned Sihasak and the NSC Secretary for talks ahead of today's NSC meeting, expected to discuss the potential cancellation of MOU 44 and replacing it with the UNCLOS mechanism. Additionally, attention is focused on establishing the Southern Border Peace Dialogue Committee.

At 08:05 on 23 April 2026 at the Government House, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul arrived, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Puangketkaew, National Security Council Secretary Chatchai Bangchuad, and National Economic and Social Development Council Secretary Danucha Pichayanan.

It is expected that Sihasak reported on his recent visit to Myanmar and discussed various security issues before the NSC meeting at 10:00 the same day, including the cancellation of MOU 44 and the review of MOU 43. Meanwhile, Chatchai is expected to finalize approaches before the NSC meeting, including the establishment of the Southern Border Peace Dialogue Committee, with appointments planned for today.

A report from the Government House stated that today's National Security Council meeting, chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, will focus on the important agenda of considering the cancellation of MOU 44. It is anticipated that the NSC will resolve to cancel it and instead adopt the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, an international legal framework covering all uses of the sea and marine resources, of which Cambodia is also a member.
