The Prime Minister revealed that the National Security Council (NSC) has agreed to cancel MOU 44 immediately without needing to consult Cambodia. The Foreign Ministry is preparing to submit the matter to the Cabinet and will use the UNCLOS mechanism instead. Approval was given to appoint "Thanat" as the head of the Southern Border Peace Talks delegation.
On 23 April 2026 GMT+7, after a National Security Council (NSC) meeting, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul spoke about the session, highlighting discussions on managing the southern border provinces as a key point. The meeting also addressed establishing the peace talks delegation, as the previous government’s term ended. Representatives and committees overseeing security matters were appointed. NSC Secretary General Chatri Bangchuad will provide detailed explanations. Mr. Thanat Suwannanon, Director of the National Intelligence Agency, was appointed as head of the Southern Border Peace Talks delegation.
The Prime Minister also revealed that the NSC approved the cancellation of MOU 44. This step completes the NSC’s process, and subsequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will submit the issue to the Cabinet. While it is uncertain how long this will take, it will be done promptly. The government has been in office for just one week. The UNCLOS framework will be used instead. The next step is to cancel MOU 44 without any further review or consultation with Cambodia, allowing immediate termination without requiring Cambodia’s consent.
