Peoples Party MP Urges Government to Stop Delaying Climate Change Legislation, Warns Crisis Wont Wait — Thailand Lacks Tools to Fight

A People's Party MP urges the government to stop delaying the climate change legislation, criticizing that the crisis will not wait and Thailand lacks the tools to fight. She warns against empty promises because delays increase the costs the public must bear.

On 23 April 2026, at the parliamentary press room, People's Party MP Ms. Narumas Piambandit of Chonburi Constituency 6 held a press conference calling on the government to expedite consideration. "The draft Climate Change Act." Narumas said the People's Party submitted this draft law to parliament in March, but by April 2026 there has been no concrete progress, even though the climate crisis waits for no one. Thailand faces worsening impacts each year, including floods, droughts, PM2.5 haze, and abnormal temperature rises. These issues are not distant but directly affect people's lives, economy, and security. The key question is how long the government will allow the situation to continue without clear legal tools.

Narumas continued that the proposed Climate Change Act is not symbolic legislation but lays a fundamental framework to systematically and seriously address the crisis more effectively. The key points include binding greenhouse gas reduction targets, accompanied by clear action plans, indicators, and accountability—not just policy statements. It also proposes establishing mechanisms to manage climate policies to solve agency complexities and ensure unified implementation.

Another crucial aspect is promoting a low-carbon economy and ensuring a just transition, with measures supporting workers and businesses that might be affected, so the climate solution burden does not fall on any single group. The law also emphasizes public participation, creating space for those directly impacted to have real roles in policy-making. Narumas said the People's Party is ready to work with all sectors—government, private, and civil society—to push this law forward, but cooperation must be based on sincerity and commitment to solving the problem.

Therefore, today the People's Party demands the government promptly submit the draft law for parliamentary consideration. They urge stopping the shelving of laws related to the nation's future, including the Climate Change Act and the Clean Air Act, all of which directly affect citizens' health and quality of life.

"We ask the government to show a clear commitment to action, not just empty words promising importance but doing nothing, because every delayed second and day means increased costs borne by the people—in economy, health, and quality of life," she said. Ms. Narumas also said,

Addressing climate change is not the task of any single political party but a shared national responsibility. Thailand's future should not be postponed due to political delays, and today's decisions will determine whether we can respond to the crisis in time or let it become irreparable.
