Democrat Party Appoints Sakolthee and Phithakdet as Two Committee Chairmen No New Deputy Leader to Replace Veeraphong

The Democrat Party has appointed Sakolthee and Phithakdet to fill two committee chairman positions. It declined to comment on the 10 Palang Pracharath MPs who have not ceased their duties amid ethical proceedings, emphasizing that the Democrat Party is able to cooperate with all political parties. Tomorrow’s general meeting will not appoint a new deputy leader to replace Veeraphong.

On 24 April 2026 at the Democrat Party office, Chaiwut Bannawat, party list MP and party secretary-general, spoke about selecting MPs from the party to serve as chairmen of two standing committees the party obtained: the Public Health Committee and the Anti-Money Laundering and Narcotics Committee. He said the party previously discussed and agreed to assign Sakolthee Pattiyakul, party list MP and deputy party leader overseeing the Bangkok area, and Phithakdet Detdecho, MP for Nakhon Si Thammarat, to these roles. Who will chair which committee will be decided later. Regarding the party’s annual general meeting scheduled for 25 April 2026, as mandated by political party law and the Election Commission, this is a routine agenda. There will be no appointment of a new deputy leader to replace Veeraphong Prapa, who resigned from the party, because this occurred after the agenda was set and could not be reported to the Election Commission in time. Furthermore, as this is not an urgent matter, no appointment will be considered for the vacant position yet.

When asked about the Supreme Court’s refusal to order 10 Palang Pracharath MPs to suspend their duties amid an ethics case, and how this affects the opposition’s collaborative work moving forward, Chaiwut said he had no comment on the court’s decision not to suspend them. However, regarding parliamentary work as part of the opposition coalition, the Democrat Party reaffirmed that it can work together with all political parties.
