Sophon Highlights Obstacles in Drug Problem Solutions: Calls for Integrated Effort and Political Unity Among MPs and Senators

Sophon Sarum delivered a keynote on the role of the House of Representatives in solving drug problems, criticizing the involvement of many agencies working separately. He recommended integrating cooperation among all units to address the issue and urged MPs and Senators to set aside politics and work together on drug solutions.

At 09:15 on 27 April 2026 at the Parliament, the Secretariat of the House of Representatives organized a project titled "House of Representatives Meet the People" to promote the legislature’s role in integrated drug problem solutions. Sophon Sarum, Speaker of the House, gave a special lecture on the success in tackling drug problems through cooperation across sectors. Drawing from his three years’ experience fighting drugs as Deputy Prime Minister, he noted that many agencies across ministries and departments have drug-related responsibilities, and budgets are scattered. The main obstacle is isolated actions; he emphasized the need for integration and gathering ideas from many provinces. The term "integration" has long been a key governmental remedy.

Today, the country faces a budget crisis with limited funds. He expressed a desire to see integrated spending across sectors, and called for reviewing laws to ensure adequacy. He intends for the legislature to use laws to drive national problem-solving. He urged parliament members to collaborate quickly on drug issues, asking if politics could be set aside temporarily to work effectively. He encouraged real cooperation to amend laws that facilitate progress and to push the country forward efficiently. He lamented that some laws expire before representatives can enact them, and some issues require depoliticizing to advance the nation.
