On 28 April, Democrat Party to Confirm Candidate Names for Bangkok Council with Apichai and Mom Korn Showing Interest in Governor Race

Sakolthee revealed that on 28 April, the Democrat Party will hold a meeting to approve candidates for Bangkok council seats, with names including Apichai Techaubon and Mom Korn Kasemsri, who have shown interest in running for Bangkok governor.

At 14:30 on 27 April 2026 GMT+7 Sakolthee Phatthiyakul, a party-list Member of Parliament and Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party responsible for Bangkok area, shared at the Democrat Party headquarters about progress in selecting candidates for the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) seats under the party’s banner, stating that the party has now considered candidates for over 40 out of the 50 BMC districts. They expect to complete the list in time to submit it to the party’s parliamentary meeting and the executive committee for review of all prospective BMC candidates’ names and qualifications on the afternoon of 28 April. This will allow preparations for subsequent steps.

Regarding the party’s candidate for the position of Governor of Bangkok, Sakolthee said no final decision has been made yet, adding that Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva had stated they are currently recruiting and awaiting responses from potential candidates, and there is still time. When asked whether Apichai Techaubon,

the former party treasurer, is among those being approached to run for governor, Sakolthee replied that he did not know if Apichai was personally contacted by the party leader but was aware that the leader had mentioned Apichai. When further asked about the recent name of Mom Korn Kasemsri,

an independent energy academic and political activist, and whether the party had approached him, Sakolthee said they understood that he had shown interest and that intermediaries had contacted the party indicating his willingness to run. However, all decisions depend on the party’s parliamentary and executive committee meetings, with updates expected by the evening of 28 April, especially concerning the council candidates.
