The Cabinet has approved Thailand's nomination of a representative to compete for the position of Director-General of the WHO, aiming to highlight Thailand's leading role in global public health.
On 28 April 2026 at the Government House, Ms. Ploytale Laksamee Sangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed the Cabinet meeting results. The meeting approved the Ministry of Public Health's proposal for Thailand to nominate a candidate for the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Ms. Ploytale stated that the Cabinet assigned the Ministry of Public Health to select the most knowledgeable and suitable Thai representative to run for the position. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and related agencies were requested to support diplomatic efforts and public relations for this election. If Thailand's candidate is elected, it will mark a significant step in elevating Thailand’s role in global health affairs.
“If Thailand’s representative holds this position, it will not only enhance Thailand’s image and influence on the world stage but also provide a crucial opportunity to advance health issues important to Thailand. Moreover, it will benefit the ASEAN region by attracting attention and support, including budgetary and development projects, which will strengthen and sustain the region’s public health systems,” the Deputy Spokesperson concluded.
