Thaksin to Be Released on 11 May, May Not Need EM Bracelet Due to Age Over 70

Thaksin has successfully passed parole after the Ministry of Justice's final parole committee meeting. He is scheduled for release under supervision from prison on 11 May 2026. The committee discussed the possibility that he may not need to wear an EM bracelet because he is an elderly prisoner over 70 years old.

On 29 April 2026, after the Ministry of Justice's parole committee meeting chaired by Ms. Tharinee Saengsawang, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice—appointed by Ms. Pongsawat Nelayothin, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice—the committee met with representatives from various agencies to consider and approve prisoners nationwide who qualified for general parole. The meeting started at 09:00. Among the notable individuals was Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister and a convicted prisoner at Klong Prem Central Prison, who has been incarcerated since 9 September 2025. As of 29 April 2026, he has served 7 months and 20 days, leaving 12 days to complete two-thirds of his one-year sentence, qualifying him for supervised parole on 11 May 2026 as previously reported.

At 13:30 on 29 April 2026 at the Ministry of Justice on Chaeng Watthana Road, Bangkok, the Ministry of Justice's parole committee, chaired by Ms. Tharinee Saengsawang, Deputy Permanent Secretary, convened with representatives from the Department of Corrections, Department of Probation, Department of Rights and Liberties Protection, Department of Special Investigation, Office of the Narcotics Control Board, Ministry of Public Health, Office of the Judiciary, Office of the Attorney General, Royal Thai Police, Department of Provincial Administration, Department of Social Development and Welfare, and others. They reviewed and approved the list of convicted prisoners nationwide who met the criteria for general parole to be released under supervision according to their remaining sentences.

It was reported that after more than three hours of deliberation, the committee resolved that Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, a convicted prisoner at Klong Prem Central Prison, qualified for general parole without the requirement to wear an EM bracelet due to his status as an elderly prisoner over 70 years old with underlying health conditions. The committee's decision will be communicated to the Klong Prem Central Prison Commander and probation officers. Klong Prem Central Prison will proceed with releasing Thaksin to supervised parole for four months on 11 May 2026.
