Chulapan Orders Swift Compensation for Riders Family, Plans Labor Law for Platform Workers Protection

The Minister of Labor expressed sorrow over the death of a rider hit by a vehicle and urged the Social Security Office to expedite compensation payments to the family according to their rights. He also pushed for new social security legislation to protect informal workers, noting that this loss serves as a costly lesson.

On 1 May 2026, Chulapan Amornwiwat, Minister of Labor and leader of the Pheu Thai Party, offered his deepest condolences to the family of 27-year-old rider Alongkorn, who died in a traffic accident while working. He emphasized that this incident reflects the vulnerability of platform workers who urgently need protection.

Chulapan revealed that upon learning of the incident, he immediately instructed the Social Security Office (SSO) to verify the deceased’s entitlement to benefits. Preliminary data showed the deceased had been insured. He directed a thorough check of accumulated benefits and eligible compensation amounts to ensure full payment is promptly delivered to the bereaved family.

Regarding long-term solutions, the Minister stated that the safety and welfare of platform workers are among his top priorities. Currently, the Pheu Thai Party is preparing to submit a bill amending social security law to establish an equal basic welfare system. The Ministry of Labor is also studying reforms to adapt the law to new digital-era work patterns, ensuring equal protection, welfare, and workplace safety for all workers.

Chulapan concluded by saying that every worker’s life holds equal value and dignity. This loss is a costly lesson that highlights the urgent need for the state welfare system to evolve with the times.

“As Minister of Labor and leader of the Pheu Thai Party, I will fully push this legislation forward to restore justice and provide dignified protection to all informal workers, who are vital engines driving the country’s economy,” Chulapan emphasized.
