Thai Government Supports Peace, Welcomes Myanmar’s Transfer of Aung San Suu Kyi to House Detention

The government spokesperson revealed that Thailand welcomes Myanmar's transfer of Aung San Suu Kyi back to house detention, believing that a gradual and appropriate approach to engagement will produce positive results, and affirmed support for peace and stability in the country.

On 1 May 2026, Ms. Rachada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, stated that the Thai government welcomes Myanmar’s decision to transfer Aung San Suu Kyi back to house detention. This reflects positive progress and Thailand is ready to promote appropriate and gradual engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar to support the peace process and reconciliation within Myanmar.

The spokesperson also disclosed that during the visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew to Myanmar, where he met President Min Aung Hlaing on 22 April, the discussions were constructive, focusing on strengthening relations, border security, and preparing to reopen the Mae Sot–Myawaddy checkpoint. The Myanmar leader also reported that former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and positive measures will be taken in the future.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summarized its congratulations on developments in Myanmar as follows:

1. Thailand welcomes the release of detainees, including former President U Win Myint, on the occasion of Myanmar’s New Year, and supports Myanmar’s ongoing efforts to engage all parties aiming for sustainable peace and reconciliation.

2. Thailand welcomes Myanmar’s commitment to advancing the peace process and its invitation to all armed groups to join peace talks to restore peace and stability to the country. Thailand supports these positive developments and stands ready to assist these efforts.

Thailand also expressed hope that all relevant parties will cooperate during the peace process. Myanmar has stated it will continue working with Thailand and ASEAN to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need.

Recently, footage was broadcast showing the former State Counsellor being transferred from prison to an alternative designated place of detention.

“The Thai government continues to monitor the situation in Myanmar closely, using a measured and appropriate engagement approach, supporting peace, stability, and sustainable development in Myanmar through cooperation with all parties under the ASEAN framework for the benefit of the Myanmar people and regional stability,” Ms. Rachada said.
