The government is speeding up efforts to "reduce fares, raise safety standards, and expand service networks" to concretely improve citizens' quality of life, preparing to waive entrance fees when transferring between train lines.
3 May 2026 GMT+7 Ms. Lalida Pertvivatana, Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the government, through the Ministry of Transport, is actively advancing systematic and continuous development of the rail transport system following the enforcement of the Rail Transport Act B.E. 2568 (2025) on 27 March 2026. The aim is to upgrade the rail system to be more convenient, safe, and fair for users, reducing living costs and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens in every aspect.
At the first Rail Transport Policy Committee meeting of 2026, held on 30 April 2026, the government pushed forward proactive key measures covering three main dimensions: reducing citizens' expenses, improving safety, and developing a more efficient rail network to ensure people benefit tangibly and swiftly.
Dimension of reducing citizens' living costs The government plans to set fare caps to prevent unfair charges, as well as prepare to waive transfer entrance fees when switching train lines, along with providing benefits for vulnerable groups such as children, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and veterans. Additionally, passenger protection measures include requiring operators to compensate for delays or cancellations, ensuring fairness and genuinely easing the burden on the public.
Dimension of safety The government is raising strict safety standards across all aspects by clearly defining system and safety zones, enforcing robust standards for vehicles and infrastructure, mandating personnel certification according to standards, and requiring operators to provide accident insurance to protect passengers from potential damages, thereby building assurance and confidence in rail services.
Dimension of network and service development The government is accelerating investment and network expansion nationwide by advancing urban rail projects and regional double-track rail projects currently under construction, to enhance logistics efficiency and support the country's economic growth, while encouraging private sector participation to increase competition, reduce costs, and improve overall service quality.
The Deputy Government Spokesperson added at the end, "The government is committed to actively driving tangible rail system development to provide citizens with convenient, safe, and fair services, reduce daily living expenses, and simultaneously strengthen the country's long-term economic capabilities."
