Government Spokesperson Reports First Month Progress on Southern Border Understanding

The government spokesperson reported on the government's first month of progress in the southern border provinces, covering peace talks and studies with a people-centered approach, advancing understanding and trust toward sustainable peace in the area.

On 3 May 2026, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that in the one month since the government took office, it has earnestly worked to address issues in the southern border provinces, covering security, economy, society, education, and the peace process, with the people as the central focus, aiming to build understanding, trust, and lasting peace in the area.

In the first week after taking office, the Prime Minister visited Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani provinces on 17 April to closely monitor the situation and issued a policy directive for all agencies, both civilian and security forces, to operate under the principle of “Understanding, Access, Development” to ensure solutions precisely address the people's needs.

Regarding development, the Prime Minister instructed relevant agencies to accelerate efforts to improve the quality of life in all aspects, including income, economic opportunities, education, and social coexistence with mutual understanding, aiming to reduce community vulnerability and build confidence between the state and citizens, which is a fundamental basis for long-term peace.

Meanwhile, at the National Security Council meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, clear directions were set in five key areas:

1. Developing the education system in line with the local context.

2. Enhancing the capabilities of volunteers.

3. Strengthening Thai–Malaysian cooperation.

4. Appointing the head of the peace talk delegation.

5. Appointing a special government representative to address issues in the southern border provinces.

For advancing the peace process, a new chief negotiator from the civilian side has been appointed: Mr. Thanat Suwannanon, Director of the National Intelligence Agency, who has extensive experience in this field. He will continue constructive and inclusive dialogue with all parties, allowing all viewpoints to participate in seeking solutions.

“The government is deeply committed to seeing the people in the southern border provinces live safely, have opportunities, and enjoy tangible improvements in quality of life. Listening to the people's voices and close cooperation will be key to creating sustainable peace and trust,” the spokesperson said.
