Siripong Explains Land Bridge as a New Global Option Amid War Era

Siripong explained that the land bridge is a public-private partnership project. He acknowledged environmental impacts but emphasized that the local people are living well and prospering.

On 4 May 2026, Mr. Siripong Angkasagulkiat, Deputy Minister of Transport, explained the necessity of the land bridge project following opposition criticism of rushed implementation. He noted the tense situation in the Middle East and planned toll increases in several countries’ straits have led the world to seek new transport routes. He stressed the government must quickly attract investors as the project requires over a decade to build. Regarding concerns about cost-effectiveness, he said top global consulting firms have calculated the risks and private investors are involved to scientifically screen those risks.

Regarding environmental issues, he admitted that large projects inevitably have impacts, but the key is to implement mitigation measures and generate income so local residents can live well. On legal progress, he expects the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) Act to be submitted to parliament within this year to clearly define benefits and operational zones. The budget exceeding 900 billion baht will focus on public-private partnership investment, not solely government funds. He confirmed the government is attentive to public feedback, as seen in reducing land lease terms from 99 to 50 years. Deputy Prime Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn is preparing to visit local areas soon to listen personally and build confidence on all fronts.
