Phiphat inspects AOT, directing the advancement of Quick-Win projects that emphasize advanced safety technology, while expediting airport expansions and adding facilities to raise service standards to a global level.
On 5 May 2026, Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, inspected the operations of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT). He set policies focusing on important Quick-Win projects and urged AOT to accelerate the development of air transport systems to enhance service quality. AOT is responding to this policy by rapidly developing airports according to the master plan, aiming to create memorable and impressive travel experiences, reduce unnecessary expenses, and support regional economic growth. Attending the meeting at AOT headquarters were Dr. Ratchapong Chukaew, Secretary to the Minister; Mr. Chayatham Promsorn, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport; Mr. Apirat Chaiwongnoi, Chairman of AOT; Ms. Pawina Chariyathitipong, President and CEO; along with other AOT executives.
Quick-Win Policy Direction
Mr. Phiphat said the Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Transport to accelerate the development and integration of transport systems nationwide to provide the public with modern, convenient, safe, and standardized transportation. The Ministry has expedited three key Quick-Win projects to achieve rapid and sustained results as follows.
(1) Accelerate completion of projects under construction so they open promptly, including the procurement of drone detection and suppression technology and bird strike prevention projects.
(2) Expedite bidding for approved or ready projects, such as the provision of apron services and ground equipment (Suvarnabhumi Airport, second operator) and warehouse services (Suvarnabhumi Airport, second operator).
(3) Accelerate submission of projects for Cabinet approval, including the East Expansion passenger terminal extension at Suvarnabhumi Airport, the 2025 Suvarnabhumi Airport master plan, Don Mueang Airport development phase 3, Chiang Mai Airport development phase 1, Phuket Airport development phase 2, and preliminary feasibility studies of Andaman and Lanna airports.
Accelerating Airport Expansion
Mr. Phiphat added he has given important policies to AOT as the operator of six major airports in Thailand and the gateway to the country, divided into three key areas:
1. Accelerate the development of air transport systems to enhance service quality and support sustainable growth.
2. Invest in expanding airport capacities and apply automation technology to elevate passenger services.
3. Study the development of Andaman and Lanna airports to support and relieve traffic at the main airports.
Promoting Thailand as a Global Aviation Hub
Ms. Pawina Chariyathitipong, President and CEO of AOT, stated that AOT is ready to support the government's policy to promote Thailand as a world-class destination by making Thai airports global aviation hubs that are safe under international standards, offer excellent service, and operate modern and sustainably. Currently, AOT is accelerating the expansion of six airports according to the master plan to handle over 180 million passengers annually by 2034. In particular, Suvarnabhumi Airport is fast-tracking the East Expansion and construction of the South Terminal. Simultaneously, AOT is pushing forward projects for apron and ground service equipment, ground passenger services, related businesses, and warehouse services at Suvarnabhumi Airport for second and third operators to increase service efficiency and speed, aiming to open by 2027.
Accelerating Development of Five Additional Airports
AOT will also invest efficiently and cost-effectively in developing five other airports to maximize public benefits, enabling them to handle more flights and passengers. The focus will be on enhancing passenger experience with excellent service quality and full implementation of international technology at every stage of airport operations, creating a relaxing atmosphere to impress foreign travelers and encourage repeat tourism. Moreover, studies will be accelerated for investment projects to construct Andaman and Lanna airports to ease air traffic at Phuket and Chiang Mai airports.
Collaboration with National Security Council on Drone Detection
Regarding safety measures, AOT aims to raise airport safety and security standards to align with international norms and address emerging risks. It will expedite cooperation with the National Security Council to procure Anti-Drone systems equipped with detection and countermeasure technologies capable of AI-based threat analysis and assessment, covering both near and far ranges. Additionally, advanced technology will be acquired to manage wildlife hazards through warning, surveillance, and deterrence, collecting data to analyze and develop bird and dangerous animal management strategies.
Security operations at AOT’s six airports are monitored and overseen by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and have been audited for safety and security standards by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), confirming that AOT's operations comply with global standards.
