"Dr. Joe" reveals regret over leaving his MP seat but accepts the unexpected chance to run for Bangkok governor replacing "Wiroj," while "Petch Karunphon" hopes to take over his parliamentary seat.
On 6 May 2026, Mr. Chaiwat Sathawornwijit, known as Dr. Joe, a party-list MP and deputy leader of the People’s Party (PChon), submitted his resignation letter to the administrative office to prepare for his candidacy in the Bangkok governor election. This resignation will allow Mr. Karunphon Tiensuwan, the next party-list candidate, to step up and assume the parliamentary role.
After submitting the letter, Mr. Chaiwat shared that although he feels regret over his role in parliament, he is excited about the new opportunity to serve the people of Bangkok. He candidly acknowledged that originally the best candidate was Mr. Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn. If it were not for the complicated issues related to the 44 MPs’ case, this seat might have been Mr. Wiroj’s rather than his. However, since the case remains unclear, the party decided it was too risky and agreed to send him to fulfill this role instead.
When asked about competing against the current Bangkok governor, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Mr. Chaiwat admitted the contest would not be easy because he knows many people in Bangkok are still very satisfied with Mr. Chadchart. Nevertheless, the People’s Party hopes for victory and wants to offer an alternative. “We want to present what kind of capital city Bangkok will be—one that truly offers a good life for everyone. I volunteer to prove this intention,” he said.
