Sorsak advocates the “Hyak” strategy, joining forces with Middle Powers to set global standards in three key areas—public health, green initiatives, and food security—to counterbalance the influence of the US and China.
On 6 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Sorsak Somraikrasakrit, a party-list MP from the Prachachon Party, posted on his personal Facebook about Thailand’s foreign policy direction. He stated that amid the rivalry between major powers such as the US and China, Thailand should not limit its options to merely “choosing sides” but must position itself as a powerful Middle Power.
Sorsak compared Middle Powers to “knots in a net” that must be woven together; if any knot is missing, the entire net loses strength. True power arises from harmonizing voices to counter the hard power of giants. He proposed three main strategies for middle-sized countries to pursue jointly: establishing an international public health network using experiences from universal health coverage and a regional crisis management center (Regional CDC) as leverage on the world stage to protect humanity impartially; uniting carbon credit centers to define “tropical carbon credits” independently to prevent global trade rules from being monopolized by developed countries, turning natural resources into economic power; and creating a “smart food reserve” linking Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Middle East to guarantee global food security, elevating these nations from cheap exporters to “guardians of global trust” through Blockchain technology.
Sorsak emphasized that the old foreign policy focused only on flexibility or being a buffer state is no longer sufficient. Thailand must advance to become a node that creates new rules in areas where the world demands assurance. “Middle Powers will be like armadillos curling up and playing dead if isolated. True power does not come from any single knot standing out but from all knots pulling together. Therefore, connectivity is not just an option; it is the only way to shape the future direction of the world’s winds.”
