Thousands in Korat Gather to Remember Uncle Chatchai, a Leader of Faith Suwat Leads 28th Anniversary Merit-Making Ceremony

The people of Korat wholeheartedly joined the remembrance day for "Uncle Chatchai," honoring him as a model leader who pointed out that the current economic recovery must draw on strengths in "tourism, agriculture, and food" to compete in global trade.

On 6 May 2026 at the Chart Pattana Party office in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Suwat Liptapanlop, chairman of the Chart Pattana Party, presided over a merit-making ceremony marking the anniversary of the passing of Gen. Chatchai Chunhawan, Thailand's 17th Prime Minister. The event was attended by party leaders, Korat MPs, community leaders, and over 1,000 citizens.

The atmosphere at the event was warm, featuring the laying of roses and marigold garlands on a statue of Gen. Chatchai as a sign of gratitude to the late leader. A highlight was the display of Gen. Chatchai's favorite chopper motorcycle, which the people of Korat had collectively donated one baht each to purchase. This was accompanied by a saxophone performance of "Baan Rao," a song he loved, leaving a strong impression on attendees.

In his commemorative speech, Suwat noted that although Gen. Chatchai passed away 28 years ago (6 May 1998), his contributions remain memorable, especially his policy of "turning battlefields into marketplaces," which transformed the Indochina region from war zones into trading partners, ushering Thailand into a "golden age of the economy." Gen. Chatchai's success stemmed from his modern leadership, broad vision, and ability to compromise and build relationships with world leaders—foundations that propelled Thailand's rapid growth during that era.

Suwat also proposed ways to revive Thailand's current economy, emphasizing the application of past successful lessons by focusing on Thailand's global competitive strengths in tourism and health, elevating the country as a world wellness hub, and innovatively processing agricultural products to add value.

Suwat expressed confidence that if the government adopts a clear vision and builds on these potentials, Thailand's economy can regain strength and greatness, as it did during the era of Gen. Chatchai Chunhawan, the beloved former prime minister of Korat.
