Anutin Aims to Turn Global Crisis into ASEAN Opportunity, Confident in Regional Strength

Anutin aims to turn the global crisis into an opportunity for ASEAN, confident in the region's strength as each member complements one another to become a center for trade, transportation, and investment.

At 18:10 on 6 May 2026 at the Government House, Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, gave an interview regarding his visit to the Republic of the Philippines to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit from 7 to 9 May. He said there were discussions throughout the day to prepare for the meeting. When asked if there would be many bilateral talks, Anutin said that ASEAN meetings allow almost all members to hold bilateral talks since the region is familiar with each other's leaders. Upon arrival, they meet with close contacts, and even if not meeting in the plenary, they communicate continuously. Bilateral discussions will be held with nearly every country attending the summit.

When asked if there were any positions to be declared at this meeting, Anutin replied that they must emphasize the strength of the region, adapting status and building a solid foundation in ASEAN, which is now the safest region if members cooperate. This cooperation can create channels and opportunities for regional economic growth. At least for now, Thailand remains credible because it has its own strength. When combined with the strength of other countries in the region, each complements the others, enabling the region to become a center for trade, transportation, and investment. They will use opportunities arising from crises in other regions worldwide to create opportunities within ASEAN.
